14 Kayaking in Cali: La Jolla Cove, San Diego CA

Continuing on with my California adventures, the next day consisted of kayaking with my family. Kayaking is an activity that my parents, sister, and I take part in in a large majority of our vacations. We are all very active people and kayaking gives us an opportunity to check out the scenery of wherever we are visiting from a new vantage point: the water. It's a fun excursion that all four of us enjoy.

Therefore, my sister scheduled us a kayaking tour of La Jolla Coves, which is one of the main attractions of San Diego. It is known for its beautiful sunsets, as well as the opportunity to see many seals swimming in the area, lounging in the coves, or even right up next to tourists on the beach.

After waking up and having breakfast, I immediately jumped on my computer and took an exam for one of my classes. Once complete, it was time to enjoy the day! My family and I started off our plans by driving down to La Jolla and grabbing lunch at a local taco stand before grabbing our kayaks and heading down to the beach.

As we were waiting by the shore for our tour to begin, a crazy amount of fog rolled in. We could barely see the edge of the water from just a few yards up the beach! Our kayaking tour guides began to worry us, stating that they were afraid of people paddling out too far and getting lost. At this point, we were unsure if we would even be able to kayak. Somehow, however, our guides took us out into the expansive and unknown whiteness ahead.

As we started paddling out and the rest of our group joined us, the fog miraculously began to clear. The blue sky soon retuned, just in time for our tour to begin. We were grateful for the good weather to return, but the fog actually ended up creating a pretty neat opportunity for us. It gave us a misty afternoon and mysterious ambiance and we were able to capture some cool photos to remember the experience.

As we paddled, we stopped along the way and were told some history about the coves and how they were formed. It was very interesting to see how high the water levels once were, and how the erosion has slowly eaten away at the tall cliffs. We paused outside one of the coves, and were told that it had recently broken apart. As we sat outside, our guides decided if it was safe enough to enter the cove, being that we would have to time it perfectly so that we wouldn't be inside during a big swell of waves.

Eventually, the guides took turns guiding each one of our kayaks into the cave. I am so glad we got to experience this because it was one of the coolest moments of the trip. Inside the cove, there were baby seals up on the ledges all around us was an amazing sight to see! It was also very neat to be inside of the cove looking out at the light shining in from the outside. As my sister and I's kayak was on the way out of the cove, a wave did pass by giving us a fun ride back out into the open water.

After exiting the cove, we headed back to shore to conclude our kayaking adventure. It was so fun to get out on the water and get to explore the coves that La Jolla is so famous for. It was also fun the opportunity to enjoy an activity that we do not get to do everyday. After exiting the kayaks, we headed to the La Jolla beach to see the seals up close. I was so surprised how unbothered they were by all of the people around them. I had also never been so close to one before, so it was so cool getting to see them napping on the beach and soaking up the sun.

Overall, our day out on the water was amazing! It was such a great experience getting to kayak around the cliffs and coves of La Jolla. We got some fresh air, got to see the seals, and had the new experience of paddling into coves. I had never before kayaked on the ocean before so that was also a completely new experience for me. The best part was getting to experience it with my entire family and spend a really great day together.
